Full day excursion in a canoe or kayak, the river skirts along the scenic State Route 97 highway for much of your 18 mile adventure.
Mile 2: You’ll pass under the Barryville Shohola Bridge, a 5th generation bridge that was reconstructed in 2006. After passing the bridge, the river cuts away from the highway, and you will paddle through a remote area rich in scenic beauty and wildlife. Watch for bald eages, deer, duck, and more.
At about mile 7, you’ll pass by an eel weir. Tip: The river becomes shallow after this weir. Paddlers that stay far right will pass through without issue.
Your half way through when you see our Indian Head Pond Eddy location on the left. Feel free to stop by and say hello. Bathroom facilities available. Gear up and get ready as the 2nd half of your adventure offers more exciting white water. i.e. Staircase, Mongaup (river right), and Butlers (river left).
Mile 13: Mongaup Rapids is created by the merge of the Mongaup River and Delaware River. A spectacular roller coaster set of rapids will be sure to thrill everyone. The best on the Delaware!
Mile 14: paddle through the famous Hawk’s Nest area.
History: The Hawk’s Nest name is derived from the birds of prey that nest in the area. Originally a one-lane dirt road in 1859, this winding road overlooks the Delaware River valley and is now part of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.
Stay far left just before entering the Hawk’s Nest region to catch the standing waves at Butler’s.
Ride some more waves as you travel under the Millrift Railroad Bridge or locally known as #2 Railroad Bridge, once used for the Erie Railroad.
About 1 more mile and you’ll see our landing on the right and your adventure is complete.
