The longest raft trip from our Matamoras location, which is the closest site to NYC and NJ, offers the best whitewater experience on the Delaware River. Be sure to allocate extra time on the water if you plan on swimming, picnicking, or simply relaxing in the sun.
This trip features the most exciting whitewater on the river, providing a fun splash for kids and adults of all ages. Enjoy the stunning scenery as the river flows through the famous Hawk’s Nest area. The name “Hawk’s Nest” comes from the birds of prey that nest in the vicinity. Originally a one-lane dirt road established in 1859, this winding route overlooks the Delaware River valley and is now part of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.
The first three miles of the river provide a gentle introduction, giving you plenty of time to acclimate. The first set of rapids, known as Staircase, is located on the right side of the river. The Mongaup Rapids, which are formed by the additional flow from the Mongaup River into the Delaware River, present a thrilling roller coaster experience and are considered the best rapids on the Delaware.
As you approach the Hawk’s Nest region, stay far to the left just before entering to catch the standing waves at Butler’s. This short stretch of rapids is sure to excite. Enjoy the ride as you pass beneath the Millrift Railroad Bridge, commonly referred to as #2 Railroad Bridge, which was once part of the Erie Railroad. Continue down the river for one more mile until you reach our landing on the right, marking the end of your adventure.
