Offering the most exciting whitewater on the river! Gaze at the spectacular scenery as the river winds through the famous Hawk’s Nest area. History: The Hawk’s Nest name is derived from the birds of prey that nest in the area. Originally a one-lane dirt road in 1859, this winding road overlooks the Delaware River valley and is now part of the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.
The first 3 miles are on the mild side, allowing you plenty of time to ‘get your feet wet’. The first set of rapids, Staircase, is on river right. The Mongaup Rapids, created by the extra flow of the Mongaup River letting into the Delaware River, are a roller coaster set of rapids and the best on the Delaware River. Stay far left just before entering the Hawk’s Nest region to catch the standing waves at Butler’s. This short set of rapids are sure to thrill. Ride the waves as you travel under the Millrift Railroad Bridge or locally known as #2 Railroad Bridge, once used for the Erie Railroad. About 1 more mile and you’ll see our landing on the right and your adventure is complete.
At 3 – 4 hours paddling, it’s a nice length without being too short. Starts at our Matamoras location (closest location to NYC, NJ), great for a day trip. Includes the best whitewater on the Delaware River. Plan more time on the water if swimming, picnicing, or just relaxing in the sun.
