Tubing down the Delaware River is an exceptional way to experience the beauty of the Pocono and Catskill Mountains. There are multiple options depending on what kind of an adventure you’re looking for. From a roughly three-hour float on a calmer stretch of water to a five- to six-hour float with more whitewater rapids, you can choose the journey that sounds best to you and your group. Either way, you’ll spend hours enjoying the river. So what should you bring? We’ve got your guide.
Learn What The Outfitter Will Provide
Every outfitter is slightly different, so first learn what the tube rental company will provide for your trip. In general, you should expect your company to provide your tube for you and basic safety equipment. Indian Head Canoes provides high-quality tubes and life jackets. We require that children ages 12 and under and non-swimmers wear a life jacket at all times. (In higher water seasons, additional restrictions may be implemented to maintain the safety of all of our guests.)
River Attire
Basic river attire should include a swimsuit and water shoes or sneakers. Flip flops are not recommended, as they will easily fall off during your ride. We also recommend sunglasses with strap, hat, waterproof container for personal items, litter bag (to help keep our river clean), and a cooler full of beverages and food (no glass containers please). If tubing in lower temperatures during the spring or fall, you may want to wear a wetsuit or polypro fleece. Some riders also like to bring goggles.
We recommend keeping a towel and change of dry clothes in your car when your journey is complete.
Sun Protection
Don’t forget the sunscreen. When spending hours on the river, you will soak up a lot of direct sun, as well as strong sun reflecting off the surrounding hillside and water. Make sure to bring SPF 30+ sunscreen to protect your skin from the UV rays. You may need to reapply once or twice during the trip.
Food and Drink
Part of the fun of tubing is enjoying a leisurely day on the water, in which you can enjoy a beverage or snack along the way. We recommend bringing a cooler full of drinks and food to enjoy during the float or on a picnic along the way. If you provide the cooler, Indian Head Canoes will float it ($20) to accompany you on your journey. Alcohol is permitted (in moderation), along with soft drinks, and food. Please note that glass bottles are prohibited. We ask that you keep any trash in litter bags or in the cooler for the duration of the float.
